One of the best adult learning experiences I had was when I took history with professor Safa at Oakton Community College. My best adult learning experience happened in a formal classroom setting. Formal settings enabled people to learn. I gained a positive teacher student relationship with formal classroom setting. Participating in this learning experience was mandatory. It was one of the required classes to transfer over to a university. I consider professor Safa as someone that brought good adult learning experience because she had an excellent teaching method. There were some assumptions of andragogy used in this experience that is self-concept, readiness to learn, and motivation to learn. Self-concept is when people start to become more mature they are more independent and self-directed. It’s very important for adults to take control of their learning and become independent. Readiness to learn happens when there is a need for learning. Life experience becomes a resource for learning. Motivation to learning is a person’s own interest or need that they want to fulfill. All of these assumptions were used in the history class of Safa. Professor Safa was someone that would use life experiences in her lessons. She was extremely passionate about the topics she was teaching. Her stories would stick to student’s memory. Professor Safa teaching has made a positive impact on me when it comes to future learning experiences because she motivated me to learn. She knew how to teach well and engage students to learning. I was participating in a mandatory learning experience. My bad adult learning experience happened in a formal classroom setting. The formal classroom setting put me in a bad mood. The reason why I had a bad adult learning experience was influence by my professor. My professor for psychology was someone who would constantly sit on the desk and just read straight off from his notes. He seemed as he had no interest in teaching. Along with that this class was taught in early morning. This wasn’t good for me because I’m not a morning person. On certain days I remember falling asleep at times from his lecture. Even when I had doubts I was anxious to approach him because he expected students to know the materials beforehand. At this point I was unsure on what I should do. Every time I got the result of the exam I felt more depressed. Even though I liked psychology and I put in time aside to study more at the end it was too late and there was nothing I could of possibility done. At the end of the semester I saw that I ended psychology with a low C. I was unhappy seeing that but that was the reality and I had to accept it. An assumption of andragogy present in bad experience was a lack in readiness to learn, adult learner experience, and motivation. Adult learner experience can make each individual unique. An experience makes a person who they are. Person that had positive experience would act
