What’s the best dog food? Well that’s a question only you can answer based on how your dog responds to the food you feed him. Knowing that, there are several important tips to guide you in the right direction to finding the healthiest dog foods.

Healthy dog food will be more expensive than most if not all foods found in PetSmart or worse, in your local grocer. You don’t pay hamburger prices for a nice T bone steak so you can’t expect to pay for cheap ingredients and get top meats and healthy dog food nutrition.

Most dogs do fine on a dry kibble dog food. This is not the healthiest food for dogs because it isn’t the most natural dog food. But it is relatively stable making it easy to store and feed. It is less expensive, calorie for calorie, than raw, frozen or canned dog food.

Meat and animal proteins are low quality of questionable sources and origin. Be caution of animal protein meals labels simply as “meat meal” as this can be just about anything and a mix of very questionable sources.

The animal meal is cooked and dried muscle meat with a certain amount of bone, skin and tissue included. Animal meals are dried to about 10% moisture and contain about 65% protein. So you can see how using whole meats will not contain enough protein to be used as the only source of protein in a dry dog food. Whole meats have as much as 65% to 75% water with as little as 15% to 20% protein. Look for a mix of animal meals and whole meat if there are whole meats used.

Whole fruits, vegetables and grains are in most quality foods. They do offer many health benefits with their vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants. Look for the whole foods but don’t be alarmed if you see a few ingredients such as beet pulp, as these are considered fragments that are not harmful if they are lower on the label, meaning the amount used is
