To begin with the action research will be done in a second grade classroom that has above grade level math students. The study will be a collective case study and children will be taught in groups in a parallel teaching style. The lessons that incorporate math will be given 2-3 times a week.
According to an article by Scholastics Best Practices: Integrating Mathematics and Language Arts incorporating math-using books to teach mathematics engages and motivates students. Ant the same time it helps them build understanding of math skills. Mathematics as any other subject can be supplemented with ELA and literature. al. (2015) they state that books that are unique, organized, and well designed invite children to read and learn interdisciplinary concepts. This is a great way to connect content areas. No one ever said that mathematics had to be isolated from other subject areas, but if we use the interdisciplinary approach as find ways to connect both children will gain more knowledge out of it. Moving on according to a study by Hong (1996) on the incorporation mathematics into literature they found that children that were expose to literature were more likely to do math related tasks an also they did score higher on math related tasks. The article by Lightsey (1996) gives us examples of categories that you can group books to use in mathematics classes. For example they state that books can fall into four categories, counting books, number books, storybooks, concept or information books. Books can be divided to use in these categories and teacher can use the books to supplement the mathematical tasks
