The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story that mainly focuses on friendship, guilt and violence. Amir being the protagonist of the novel. His betrayal of his best friend, Hassan, is the major event of his life, making the main theme of the novel betrayal. The primary betrayal happens when Amir watches there and does nothing as Hassan is raped by Assef. Amir then causes issues by removing Ali and Hassan from the family.. We observe Amir turn against Hassan as his own worries, guilt, and desperation for his father's approval overcome him throughout the novel. Firstly in chapter 7 we sadly witness Hassan getting rapped by Assef, meanwhile Amir stands by and watches this happen then later on when he sees Hassan with blood coming down his legs he acts like nothing happened and he didn't notice. "I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me. I was afraid of getting hurt. That’s what I told myself as I turned my back to the alley, to Hassan." (Hosseini 65). Ali and Hassan leave since Ali now knows what Assef did to Hassan and how Amir failed to assist him. He knew Amir had set Hassan up, and he also understood that living there was getting difficult as society changed. Amir sees Hassan as a threat to his father's relationship, which is driven by his jealousy. which is another reason Amir wanted Hassan gone. "I dream that someday you will return to Kabul and revisit the land of our childhood. If you do, you will find an old faithful friend waiting for you." (Hosseini 218). Despite the fact that Amir deceived him, Hassan remains his friend.
