“Betrayal is the breaking or violation of a presumptive contract, trust, or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals. Both “The Golden Compass” and “Diamond as Big as the Ritz” deal with the theme of betrayal in contrasting ways. On one hand Lyra tries the whole book to save Roger and in the end is his downfall, but Percy betrays John from the start and ends up dead instead. In the the novel “The Golden Compass” by Philip Pullman and the short story “Diamond as Big as the Ritz” by F. Scott Fitzgerald both deceptions had to result in a death because if everyone was to live no one would have been truly betrayed. (STRONGER)

In the beginning of the book the master and librarian are conversing about Lyra’s future and what is to come, and the librarian asks the master ‘“who is going to betray her?”’ and the master responds “No, no, that’s the saddest thing: she will be the betrayer, and the experience will be terrible. She mustn’t know that, of course…” (pg. 32). Lyra is not told about her betrayal because they are afraid if they tell her something could happen if she was to try and stop fate. They also want her to be protected from growing up to fast and learning who she truly is, a betrayer. Without this knowledge, Lyra still does everything in her power to make sure everyone around her is safe especially her best friend Roger. When she finds out Roger is missing she embarks on a mission to save him from the Obliteration Board so that his daemon does not get separated from him, but through taking him on her journey she is actually putting him in greater danger. Lyra takes Roger to accompany her to where her father is being held captive by the bears, and when Lord Asriel see’s Lyra he is distraught, until he catches a glimpse of Roger. While Lyra is sleeping, Lord Asriel abducts Roger and uses him to escape into another world by tearing Roger and his daemon apart to create dust.
