John Ross a Cherokee Indian Chief John Ross was born on October 3, 1790 in Turkeytown, Alabama near present day Center, Alabama. He was born to a Scottish/Indian mother, and a Scottish father. Though, he was only 1/8 Cherokee Indian (on mothers side.) His mother and grandmother raised him according to Cherokee traditions. He enjoyed wearing Cherokee traditional clothing when he was a child and a young man, but as he got older, he dressed like a white man.
Betsy Ross 's birth name was Elizabeth Griscom. She was born on January 1, 1752, in a colonial city of Philadelphia. Her parents were Rebecca James Griscom and Samuel Griscom, they were both Quakers. Out of seventeen children, she was the eighth. Betsy, as a young girl, attended to a Quaker school.
Betsy Ross is well known due to the fact she sewed the first American flag. Elizabeth Griscom (her name given to her at birth) was born on January 1,1752 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, She was the eighth child born in a Quaker family of seventeen children. In the years to follow, she would become known as the American folk hero, Betsy Ross. When Betsy was born, her family had been in America for 4 generations. Betsy learned to read, write and sew at an early age and like most children of this time period, once she had finished her schooling, Betsy was sent to learn a trade.
In 1817, a woman called “Wild Rose” or “Rebel Rose” was born in Maryland. When you think of a spy you probably think of a man. During the 1800’s, men were seen as the only gender to have the capability to be bold and manipulative enough to gain such secretive information. Rose had all of those endowed on her except that she was not a man but a woman. She earned the role of one of the most acclaimed spies in the history of the Civil War for her work.
Jill Lepore used quotes and images from English colonists and portraits to show how colonists wrote about their experiences during King Philip’s War and how the narrative of the war has changed throughout the centuries. It also sets how colonists will narrate wars for future centuries. The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the biggest mysteries in American history to date. I do not believe the citizens of the colony were forced to leave. Before he left, John White, the former governor of the Roanoke Colony, had instructed the colonists to carve a Maltese Cross into a nearby tree if they were forced to leave. When he returned, there was no sight of a cross, just the words ‘CRO’ carved into a nearby tree as well as “CROATOAN” carved into the gatepost of one of the forts. This lead White and his team to believe that they had moved to Croatoan Island, present day Hatteras Island, with no sign of force.

She uses Joseph Campbell’s universal “heroic cycle” as evidence that Rowlandson does in fact go through the necessary stages to be qualified as a hero. MacNeil notes that in the first step of the cycle, the “hero” must be summoned from everyday life to take part in a special quest.
De’ Crevecoeur has a very positive perspective on the fact that the frontier played an important role in the formation of American identity. He explains that as people came from Europe, they came from being slaves to the government and not being able to have anything for themselves. People came to America to follow their dreams and to be something successful instead of the unsuccessful lives they had in their homeland. He feels that the main reason they came, was to seek freedom. Crevecoeur sees these immigrants as taking action into their lives and wanting to be something more than they ever thought they could being ruled the way they were in their old country.

While reading about American history the thing that I found most appealing was the limited rights that women had during this era. Although women gave the early settlers longer life expectancy and brought hope to their future, women still were not considered equal to a man. Women were discriminated against and didn’t play an important role in early American history. Generally, women had fewer legal rights and career opportunity than men because they were considered weak and not able to perform certain tasks. Different women came from different ethnic backgrounds and were all created equal in the eyes of men.

The colonist didn’t like the laws the British made so they did many disastrous things the British didn’t like so as things kept getting worse it led to the American Revolution. The two British laws that the colonists thought were unfair are being taxed on sugar and paper, and the amount of taxes increasing. “ The madness begin in 1764 when Parliament passed taxes on sugar and paper”(unknown,1774).
