From standing up for equal rights, to introducing blues to the music scene, to becoming president, African Americans have been reaching new heights. One popular sector that African Americans have prospered in is the music industry. Throughout the years, many genres were created by African American artist, including rap, hip-hop, and the blues. Daughter of Celestine Ann “Tina” Knowles, a hairdresser and salon owner, and Mathew Knowles, a Xerox sales manager, Beyoncé was well educated. She started her education at St. Mary’s Elementary School where her talent for singing was discovered. Once discovered, she enrolled into Parker Elementary School, a magnet school for music. There, she primed her musical abilities and was later accepted into the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts. With support from friends, family, and her school, Beyoncé competed in many singing and dancing competitions. As she competed, she gained the eye of a record producer and was signed with a few other girls creating the world renowned R&B group, Destiny’s Child in the late 1990’s. The group rose to fame and became the best selling girl group of all time. In June 2005, Destiny’s Child broke up, allowing Beyoncé to follow her solo career. To be more precise, Beyoncé has sold over fifteen million albums in the United States alone. That is a fraction of the 118 million sales worldwide, not including her Destiny’s Child sales. One of her most known singles, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”, has sold over 7.7 million copies in the last eight years alone. Her sales are not the only fact that states her worth. Billboard magazine named her the “Top Radio Songs Artist of the Decade”, “Top Female Artist of the 2000’s”, and “Artist of the Millennium”, Time magazine called her one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” twice, and Forbes named her the “Most Powerful Female Musician of 2015”. In the end, there is only one true factor of success in the music world; Grammys. When it comes to Beyoncé, she is a record setter, receiving over fifty nominations and twenty Grammy wins.
