We live in a world where we are constantly changing and evolving from one thing to another. While new trends tend to appear every other month, music is the one factor in our society that seems to change as we go. Since music is more than likely a clear reflection of our culture, the techniques and methods an artist uses is an important factor in attempt to spread a message. One of the most influential female artists in our world today is Beyonce. Through her lyrics and visuals, Beyonce is able to convey her message smoothly and effectively. In the song, “Formation”, Beyonce chooses lyrics to express her and who she is behind her lavish lifestyle. “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bamma”,“I like my baby hair, with baby hair … Earned all this money but they never take the country out me I got hot sauce in my bag, swag”. Here she shows us how she is not afraid to embrace her roots and where she came from. Beyonce gets personal and mentions how she loves who she is and wouldn’t change anything for anyone. Being in the limelight in general, there is enough pressure to change your appearance to achieve society’s definition of perfect or beautiful. But Beyonce shows she is uninterested in trying to achieve unnecessary standards. The chorus, “I see it, I want it, I stunt, … I dream it, I work hard I grind ‘til I own it” Beyonce acknowledges that she has worked hard for everything she has achieved. Her successes were earned and she won’t let rumors say otherwise. While every lyric choice is chosen carefully, the phrase “I Slay” is frequently repeated phrase throughout the video.
