Hinduism is considerately one of the most complex religions based on several beliefs and ritual practices. It is the most predominate religion in India and consists of sacred writings, philosophical concepts, and historical events. One of the most essential concepts introduced in Hinduism is the notion of self-renunciation. In basic terms self-renunciation means unselfishness, one’ who sacrifices personal satisfaction in the interest of others. On the contrary, Buddhism argues that the conception of self is not equivalent to reality; therefore, encourages us to extinguish personal desires that associate with the principal of altruism.

In basic terms, it means to overcome the levels of suffering in order to achieve Nirvana (the right path of Buddhists) for final judgment and reincarnation. The secular ideology of Buddhist teachings is that by deviating oneself and others it will fulfill the goal of Buddhism. Buddhism challenges Bellah’s perspective on individualism based on three practices- Sila (morality), Samadhi (state of conscious), and Prajna (wisdom) (Stuart). One’ can overcome individual suffering and obtain Nirvana by living his or her lifestyle according to these three Buddhist practices. Bellah illustrates how individualism has manipulated our understanding of individual liberty; therefore, leading us to believe one’ has complete control over his or her destiny.
