Opposing Worldviews: Secular Humanism and Christianity Very few worldviews or religions today are as different from each other as are Secular Humanism and Christianity. For example, the fundamental truths of Christianity, such as a personal God who created the universe, the Bible as a sacred text and the direct word of God, and the deity and resurrection of Jesus Christ are all rejected by people who identify as secular humanists. Instead, humanists turn to scientific observation to answer questions about the world and human existence. The Question of Origin Secular Humanism is an atheistic worldview, meaning that humanists do not believe in a higher authority, such as the God of the Bible. (Hinson, 2008) Humanists believe that the universe has always existed, and that humans evolved from simpler organisms over a period of millions of years. (Bridgford, 2009) In contrast, Christians believe in the biblical account of creation (Genesis 1-3 New American Standard Version), in which God created the heavens, earth, and all life on earth in six days. Kurtz argues that “basic principles of moral conduct are common to virtually all civilizations.” (Kurtz, 2000, pp. 18-190) Norman also suggests that humans have “shared human values” that direct moral standards. (Norman, 2004) Humanists define a moral code by using reason to decide what should be the moral standard, based on the potential benefits or detriments to society. Humanist believe ethics are not static, and should be evaluated and changed if necessary as society evolves.
