Group 4 Abstract
This work discusses Greenleaf’s servant leadership perspective and a biblical perspective on servant leadership. The two ideas have similarities, but also have some major differences, which are discussed further. Along with the discussion of Greenleaf’s servant leadership concept is further information regarding what a biblical worldview on servant leadership looks like from an organizational perspective. The work is crucial to understanding both the similarities and differences in Greenleaf’s concept of servant leadership and the way Christians should approach the concept in leadership positions. Robert Greenleaf is credited with having coined the term “servant-leadership” in his 1970 article “The Servant as Leader.” His man-centered leadership model has become extremely popular among leadership theorists (Spears, 2004). Robert K. Greenleaf’s definition of servant leadership is one which is based on teamwork and community, involving others in decision-making, while strongly based on ethical, caring behavior with an intent on enhancing the growth of people (Spears, 1996). These ideas have spearheaded a change in many organizations implementing concepts to empower their leadership to utilize these traits. As mentioned above, Greenleaf’s work has found its way into not only businesses but also musical organizations and authors. The study of the creation of the topic and Robert Greenleaf’s perspective on servant leadership in a biblical standpoint is important for Christians. According to Spears (2004), Greenleaf proposed the importance and necessity for leaders to place others who are within the organization and outside of the business before oneself. The overarching focus of servant leadership is the service of others. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will” (NIV). Due to its sinful nature, the world is more inclined to selfish desires. This verse warns becoming like the world and encourages a new way of thinking, which could include placing other individuals or groups first. One of the characteristics of Greenleaf’s servant leadership includes the desire and work towards helping others grow (Dierendonck, 2011). 1 Timothy 5:8 states, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (NIV).
