This paper is about the Judges of biblical times. It mentions their roles and duties as the judges. This paper also includes the historical criticism of the book of judges. The specific judges whose stories are described are Elon and Abdon. The importance of biblical judges are also explored in this paper.
The judges were sent by God to help fulfill his plan. A judge was a military leader, legal administrator, and a civic officer of a tribe. The people in the tribes saw the judges as the strongest and best men to lead them. During the times of the judges, the tribes of Israel were not unified and were frequently at risk from people in areas around them.

During this time was the establishment of Israel as a people and nation. The book of Judges sees this event as a slow and complex process. Judges explores how Israel lived without a great leader and with its neighbors the Philistines and the Midianites. The book of Judges also explores how how the tribes, clans, villages, and regions interacted with each other.
Elon and Abdon were both minor judges. Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel after the judge Ibzan. For ten years Elon had judged Israel. He died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. After Elon, Israel was judged by Abdon. Abdon was the son of Hillel the Pirathonite. Abdon had forty sons and thirty grandsons. They had ridden on seventy donkeys. Abdon had judged Israel for eight years. He died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim in the mountain region of the Amalekites. Biblical Judges were very important. They served as many positions in their time. They were the military leaders and legal administrators of the tribe. The Judges worked for God and When the Jews lost faith they tried to put Israel’s faith back in God so his divine plan for the chosen people could be fulfilled.
