William Golding is an author often considered as a young adult novelist and science fiction writer. Golding is a Christian writer who uses a lot of Biblical symbolism in Lord of the Flies. (Barrow) The characters in Lord of the Flies can be compared to people in the Bible. He wrote this novel to show that evil and sin can come straight from the darkness of man’s heart. (Hynes) William Golding was born September 19, 1911 in Cornwall, England. He died of heart failure on June 19, 1993. His parents were Mildred and Alec Golding. His mother Mildred fought for women’s right to vote, and his father Alec was a teacher at Marlborough Grammar School. This is where he attended school until going to Brasenose College Oxford in 1930. (Taedcalf) After the war he returned to teaching at Salisbury and taught English, philosophy, and wrote several novels. In 1954 he published his first book Lord of the Flies, he got the idea to write this book from all that he had experienced during the war. He related the boys in the novel to the ones that he had taught during his teaching career. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983, the Booker Prize 1980, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1979. He was also knighted by the Queen in 1988 and his book Lord of the Flies is known as a global phenomenon.
