Today’s Media Many people are judgmental, because of what they see in the media. Some forms of media include television, newspaper, video games, and the Internet. Many people make assumptions based on what they see in the media. For example, many people may say all black people are bad people, because that is what they saw in the media. The assumptions that underlie in today’s media include race, gender, and religion. Racial bias is a main thing found in the media today. In the article Frames of Reference, Dyson explains examples of discrimination during Hurricane Katrina. Dyson explains how the blacks were portrayed as bad people during this time. There are many ads that are directed towards one gender, when it can be directed towards both genders. For example, many cleaning ads have women in them, because the companies believe only women use cleaning supplies. Stated in the article, Bic for Her and Crisps for Him, “Namely, women continue to be primarily portrayed in home settings, subservient to men or dependent on others (particularly on family members or the opposite sex) …” (Vilela, Nelson, Paek 234) Lukas also brings up a point about women in advertising. He said, " The roles offered to women are very limited. Many involve a woman’s confinement to the domestic sphere—caring for children, cleaning the house, shopping for groceries and making meals for a husband." Another way gender roles play a part in media is video games. In the article Where the Women Are, Taylor explains the stereotypes about female gamers. She said, “Typically the picture of gamers remains that of boys and men. Powerfully, this is often even the case for the women who themselves play games and who, when asked, still hesitate to call themselves gamers.” She is explaining that some women are hesitant to call themselves gamers, because gaming is mainly for men. She also talks about how women’s games are different from men’s. For example, she talks about “pink games”.
