Devin Chandler Chandler 1 Ms. Lapis English II Period 3 3 March 2016 The Bielski Brothers During the Holocausts there were many partisans, these were famous groups throughout the ghettos for fighting against the Nazis. The Bielski Brothers partisan was known mainly in eastern Poland. They saved over 1000 Jews from being slaughtered in ghettos, concentration camps, and death camps. The Bielski Brothers grew up in a village named Stankiewicze. It was located in eastern Poland in-between the town Lida and Nowogrodek. The home they lived in had been their family home for three generations. Their family were successful farmers who owned a mill. In June, 1941 the Soviet Union had been invaded by German troops. As more people joined the group the brothers had to deal with internal challenges. Keeping the group structure within the group was one of these challenges. Within the group there were a great variety of different types of Jews. Their social background and even their religious cultures and beliefs. People complained about how the group was being ran, opposing the leadership of the brothers. Some people also complained about how the food was being distributed among members of the group. Even with the group differing among members, the brothers had a strict military style. Total control on the structure of the group kept things going. It kept the group united and gave people a better chance to survive. The problem of the population arose. The brothers knowing sooner or later this would be a problem. Members questioned how many more people who couldn’t fight or work could be allowed into the group. People joining with those problems put a burden on the fighters responsible for protection and searching for food. The Bielski partisan had to deal with the problem of fighting for their position in the forest against the partisans that were non-Jewish. A large number of Russian partisan groups were formed in the area as a result of the retreating Red Army. The Soviet partisans were suspicious of the Bielski Brothers because their group was purely made up of Jews. The co-operation between the partisans were not always easy but the brothers still worked with Russian partisans against the
