The Party thrives on controlling the minds of its citizens from an early age. The Party implements an organization known as the Junior Spies, which encourages children to comply and spy for the Party. The importance of technology is also a recurring theme within this book. There are telescreens and microphones in every citizen’s room and hidden throughout the country. This implements a level of fear within the inhabitants and in doing so creates an atmosphere of compliance.
In 1984 by George Orwell, all members of society will ‘willingly’ conform to the Party mindset. Some people, like Winston, are allowed to run wild for part of their lives, committing Thoughtcrime, but eventually, they will be caught and corrected. The Party ensures these enemies will see the error of their ways in order for the Party to keep power. There are no laws, but there is no free will. Though lacking written rules, Big Brother rules with an iron fist through unspoken rules that must never be broken, else even the most devoted follower risks getting taken by the Thought Police.
Oceania itself is divided into three different classes: the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. The members of the Inner Party—the upper class, live their lives with more leisure than the other two classes, since there are more resources available for them. They have access to personal servants, and better food produce, whereas the materials that the Outer Party members get is ordinary. The Inner Party members can unplug their telescreens, which are huge monitors located in homes that record movements and sounds, without having to worry much, but if an Outer Party member were to unplug it, they would be accused of committing a thought crime. Committing thought crime can lead you to end up in the Ministry of Love, where the Inner Party members torture you into loving Big Brother.

In the book 1984 this is how most of the people of Oceania lived. They are controlled by the “Big Brother” that nobody knows who are what it really is. In this society they go by three slogans and which says in the book, “FREEDOME IS SALVERY, WAR IS PEACE and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”.
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, betrayal is an important recurring theme. In the superstate of Oceania, a tyrant called Big Brother rules over everyone under a Totalitarian regime. Big Brother expects absolute loyalty and those who do not obey Big Brother are punished. Trust in Oceania is almost non existent. No one can be trusted because they could be reported to Big Brother by someone else.
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the overbearing government of Oceania, Big Brother, controls and monitors everything its citizens sees, hears, and believes. In order to gain absolute loyalty from its citizens, Big Brother has control over every aspect of their lives, prohibiting them from using their own minds and causing them to fully depend on Big Brother. Through the use of manipulation and fear, Big Brother and the Party are able to decide what is real and what is not real. Big Brother believes that in order to gain absolute loyalty from its citizens, it must control everything, from the spread of information to media.

These are designed to spy on people, never allowing anyone to ever be alone, lessening the number of people that will rebel against Big Brother. Society is constantly around technology (not much of a choice), people are thought police that will see that you are guilty of committing a thought crime (thinking any bad thought against Big Brother). In this novel, thoughts are not private anymore.
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the Outer Party is silenced in order to evoke a sense of patriotism for Big Brother that is necessary for him to remain in power. This goal is achieved with anti-individualism, architecture, and historical revisionism. Orwell attempts to convey that everything outside of the Inner Party’s control must be stopped by creating an omnipresence of the government described by Orwell as “always the eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you” (Orwell, 26).
The world of George Orwell’s Oceania is an authoritarian society where the cultural hierarchy includes the inner party, the outer party, and the proles. By definition, an authoritarian society has no governing body to protect the rights of citizens. The outer party members of Oceania have no rights except the right to love and obey Big Brother; the inner party members are compelled, on pain of death, to love Big Brother. The only “citizens” that have any rights are the proles, the lowest of the low in Oceania. They are considered to be free like weeds growing in a meadow.
Throughout the novel, Big Brother systematically oppresses the citizens of Oceania by bombing, torturing, and unnecessarily starving them by way of entities such as the Ministry
“The Manifesto of Big Brother” will serve as a guideline for the citizens of Oceania before Goldstein was labelled a traitor and was an ally of Big Brother. That said, Big Brother will take on the role of Karl Marx, whereas Emmanuel Goldstein will take on the role of Friedrich Engels. I feel that writing this manifesto allowed me to look critically at the words of Karl Marx and Big Brother. As I applied the rhetorical devices, I saw how 1984 serves as a perfect analogy of the Communist Manifesto. In my manifesto you will notice evidence of pathos in the opening paragraphs as I appeal to the audience’s sense of emotion by commending on the success of the party.
Imagine being followed everywhere by a government agent. They’re watching your every move, and they’ll report you if you even make a wrong facial movement. This is essentially the case in George Orwell’s novel, 1984. Run by an English socialist government called the Party, the people’s every move is watched through telescreens. Citizens are not individual, but rather an extension of the Party.
The two control methods are related as they contribute to one purpose the totalitarian control over the people of Oceania. The people are physiologically manipulated as discussed by the mental control measures, and physically forced into loving Big Brother. This is one of the methods the government uses to control people’s minds, by placing fear into them. The fear in 1984 limits the people into even thinking of challenging the government.
O 'Brien, states in 1984 that ' 'we will squeeze you empty and then we shall fill you with ourselves ' '. This again indicates the elimination of identity and individualism which then allows authoritarian governments to exploit citizens and control them. In order for George Orwell 's totalitarian society to remain perfect, dictators must take control over all aspects of life. The reader is introduced to several ways in1984 leaders’ control citizens such as introducing Thought police, double think and newspeak. The purpose of Newspeak is to control personal beliefs as this gives the government the ability to remove and limit thoughts that are aimed against Big Brother and its parties.
“BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (Orwell 161). This statement by Orwell shows that he wrote 1984 as a warning to today’s future as he feared that mass government surveillance and invasion of the privacy of a citizen would become the norm in the future. People have indicated today that Orwell was right to a certain extent as how governments today lead massive surveillance programs .
