The role of big data in the music industry through the use of music intelligence has increased in the past decade. During a SXSW panel in 2012, Paul Lamere, Director of Developer Platform at Echo Nest, stated, “’big data’ is the solution to better listening experiences, recommendations, and playlist creation. Just as MP3 transformed music in the ‘90s, big data will do the same in this decade” (Peoples, 2012). Big data allows developers to understand their audience and users at a deeper level than just what music he or she likes to listen to. Big data is allowing developers to take the information of what music a person likes and compare it to when the individual is listening it in order to understand the emotions of the individual, as well as chose the best song for the user to listen to next. Users will know the application knows what he or she wants to listen to and will continue using the application.
