Theme in “Homeless”

Michael Crowley’s “Homeless” centers around him as a child living in Corbin, Kentucky. Corbin is a small town with a racist history to it’s name and not much else. The story focuses on the struggles of living in a community full of prejudice that targets anyone different. Crowley’s essay is about portraying bigotry in the appalachian mountains making it the theme: which is the purpose for writing a story to begin with. The theme of “Homeless” is demonstrating how asian americans are still being targeted in relatively modern day appalachian society. There are many examples in this passage that lead to this conclusion; moreover, allow me to share with you a few of these examples found in the essay. Firstly, we should discuss the setting:Corbin, Kentucky. Corbin is a decent sized town with a history of racial prejudice. For example, when Michael's football team was playing a game, and an african american player had asked if they’re still lynching black people in Corbin(217). In addition, one of the bigoted classmates at Crowley’s school tells him to “go back to where you came from”(218). Additionally, It’s important to note that this is a nonfiction story, making this a personal essay not a short story. The theme of this essay may not be a positive one, but it's important nonetheless. In summary, racism is a terrible thing that we have to work to overcome. Although, I feel most Appalachian communities aren't as conceded as this one, with it’s retrogressive racist ideals.
