To: Mayor de Blasio and the NYC Bike Plan Forum Subject: Bike plan update and next steps Date: April 16th, 2018 Recommended Action: The lack of connection between bicycle transport/parking and mass transit stops increases the barriers to entry for infrequent users. To mitigate this issue we recommend increasing the number of bike parking spaces in proximity to mass transit. In doing so, we will collaborate with local businesses to stimulate the local economy and boost community involvement. Our goal is to ensure that the general public is aware of our progress to-date and is familiarized with the ongoing goals to create a more accessible and sustainable NYC. Thus far, the negative attributes we have identified with the bike share program stem from software problems, inclement weather, damaged equipment, and a decrease of sales from bike shops when located in close proximity to Citi Bike kiosks. To successfully implement the bike share program in NYC, the current infrastructure needs to be retrofitted to more seamlessly integrate cycling into other transportation methods. These retrofits include adding bike lanes to ensure cyclists are able to move about the city safely without jeopardizing the walkability of the city. This is a highly contentious modification because it reduces the availability of on street parking, and encroaches on the territory of street vendors. Though, bike lanes in NYC have been shown to boost local business success by 49% (case, p.2).
