Bill C-5,1 some can say has taking Canada by storm, where controversies over Canada’s security has taking a new turn. Bill C-51 is an anti-terrorism act that allows for the Canadian government to have more control over the security of its citizens. The act as stated on the Parliament of Canada website is to enact the Security of Canada Information Sharing Act and the Secure Air Travel Act, to amend the Criminal Code, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts. The Act is overall meant to withstand the growing terrorism around the world not to give more power to the government. The Bill is created in the hope to create a safer Canada and to help end the fight against terrorism. Kent Roach believes that perhaps the Ottawa attack in October of 2014 hit so very close to home. That if the attack had not happened near Canada’s federal parliamentary building than this act may not have been created. Yet because it took place in Ottawa that the government was able to really understand how large of an issue terrorism in Canada has become. The 9/11 attack in the USA made Canada tighten its immigration laws but the only way something will really be able to change is if it happens there where you live. Even if this attack happened in Alberta there would not be as large of an act to reduce terrorism. This act helps to show the importance that Ottawa has over laws in Canada and that the federal government has been given to much control.
