The Defense for Large Families “…now we live in an era—maybe only a brief one, maybe only for a few generations—when parenting a bunch of kids clashes with the good of the planet” (McKibben 300). In Bill McKibben’s article, “The Case for Single-Child Families,” he argues that having a smaller family has less of a negative impact on the people, and the world in general. Unlike most people, McKibben argues that having many children is a disservice to the world the human imprint is too large, the population is too big, and having large families allows for parents to become neglectful of other world problems. Large families have been known for their efforts to society, especially if they are involved in church. There is a couple in my church, who has two boys and three girls. The mother stays at home, while the father works at a mine. Along with homeschooling her children, taking care of a newborn, the mother teachs in church (which requires a lot of preparation), substitutes in a school and still visits with other friends and family. The husband spends time with all five of his children and provides for them. He is a leader in the church, plays drums, socializes with his friends and family, outreaches, and helps those in need without wavering. They would both comfort anyone who feels down and put clothes on anyone who needs them. They teach their children to do the same thing, which in turn causes the children to spread good to the rest of the world. He was and is the God of yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever (Heb. 13:8). This means He never changes and the blessing still stands. If God had wanted humans to stop having children, He would have said so in His word. Instead, God says that children are a gift from him (Psalm 127:3). This blessing can be seen in my family. One time I remember my sister and I play wrestling and the rest of the family watching. It was so fun. We all laughed and played around the house. We have something that no amount of friends and good works can fill. We have long talks about life, morals, and support. God has blessed my parents with a large family for a reason--He doesn’t want the world to have smaller families just for population
