Born in New York to Patrick and Catherine McCarty about September 17, 1859. After the death of his father, Henry’s mother loaded her children and belongs, the family moved to Indiana. The death of Tunstall is the major event that kicked off the Lincoln County War and the Lincoln County Regulators. The first thing on the agenda for the Regulators was to avenge Tunstall’s death. The gang captured two men that had killed Tunstall and shot them. About a month later the gang caught up with Sheriff Brady and killed him along with one of his Deputies. These deaths added to Bonney’s growing list of crimes. Then the Battle of Lincoln in 1878 the Regulators staked out throughout town. The replacement Sheriff Peppin sent sharpshooters to kill the Regulators. Bill Bonney was captured and take to Santa Fe via Las Vegas. A mob formed when they arrived in Las Vegas. While in jail Bonney was interviewed and said “if I only had my Winchester I’d lick the whole crowd.” (Tuska) After arriving in Santa Fe, Billy sent letters to Governor Wallace.
