John Steinbeck Biographical Analysis
John Steinbeck was born February 27th, 1902 in Salinas California. By growing up in Salinas John Steinbeck lived where everyone was migrating to during the dust bowl. John Steinbeck grew up what could arguably have been the worst time in American history besides the War for Independence and the Civil War. John Steinbeck’s father was an accountant so his family had some money when he was growing up. Some people claim that the time period and the events John Steinbeck lived through had no influence on his books. The majority of people believe that it is because of those events that he wrote about what he did and why he wrote about them. Over the next few years he wrote In 1932 he wrote a collection of short stories called The Pastures of Heaven which is about a valley, the Corral de Tierra, in Monterey, California, which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. . Then in 1933 he wrote the book To a God Unknown which is about a man’s relationship with nature. These are not what John Steinbeck is best known for though, his best known book is The Grapes of Wrath which was published in 1939 and is about a family's journey from Oklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl in hopes for a better life. Another known book of his which may have been his first real hit was Tortilla Flat which was published in 1935 and was about a group of paisanos and their friendship and exploits in the years after World War I. John Steinbeck’s father was a treasurer for Monterey County. His mother was a former school teacher and she shared John’s love for reading and writing. In 1919 John Steinbeck graduated from Salinas high school and enrolled in Stanford university. He was a student off and on for the next 6 years before he decided to move to New York and began his career. In 1930 he marries his first wife Carol Henning. The Dust Bowl begins in 1935 which is his inspiration for The Grapes of Wrath. In 1940 he receives the Pulitzer prize for his novel The Grapes of Wrath.
