All About Dr. Wanda Diaz-Merced Introduction Dr. Wanda Diaz-Merced made such a mark on history that she was the turning point in astrophysical research. She used sonification in her research because she started going blind at age 13. Dr. Diaz-Merced completely lost her sight when she was studying for a degree in physics at the University of Puerto Rico. After college she received an internship with Robert Candey at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA after she finished her undergraduate degree. She was so appreciated because of her discoveries that she was awarded the Estrella Luike trophy in recognition of her excellent work in Astronomy. Diaz-Merced had some amazing accomplishments in science. Some examples are, when she received an internship with Robert Candey at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA after she finished her undergraduate degree (Abbas). That was a huge deal for a woman who was blind to work at NASA. Then, Dr. Diaz-Merced got accepted to Harvard University in Massachusetts and completed a special education program to teach physics (“Dr. Wanda Diaz-Merced”). “She was awarded the Estrella Luike trophy in recognition of her excellent work in Astronomy” (Green). She also won one of Google's first annual European Scholarships for Students with Disabilities (“Wanda Díaz-Merced”). One of her most famous quotes is, “If people with disabilities are allowed into the scientific field, an explosion of knowledge will take place” (Dr. Wanda Diaz-Merced). She had some incredible accomplishments, and she earned those accomplishments by her hard work and dedication, and perseverance.
