Sexual orientation refers to whether individuals are attracted to members of the sex, the same sex, or both. A study was done and the results showed that behavior attraction, and identity are not always consistent. The article discuses that same sex siblings of homosexual individuals were also homosexual when they were identical twins, fraternal twins and adoptive siblings.
Surroundings and background can prove to influence someone’s sexuality as stressors within a family, certain events, and invoked ideas are all present to sway how one thinks. David Halperin is a Social Theorist who is one of the more known researchers when it comes to the study of proving that homosexuality is in fact acquired after birth. “Halperin believed in Planophysical theory. This theory believes that homosexuality is a freak of nature, an error” (Heffner). Halperin strongly believes that homosexuality stems from one child’s hatred of the same sex parent not being resolved, thus, ending in a favor attraction of the same sex. Recently there has been a debate going weather we should or should not determine sexual orientation at birth. My standpoint in this debate is that we should not determine sexual orientation at birth. Some reasons why i believe we should not determine sexual orientation at birth is because the world would be a more accepting place and there would be more variety in the world. A lot of the time when people come out as lgbtq they are thought as differently or are not supported, if people did not determine sexual orientation at birth the world would be more accepting because it would be more ‘normal’ to be apart of the lgbtq community. Although sexual orientation and sexual identity are significantly related, I believe they can exist independently. One doesn’t directly depend on the other and vice versa. Sexual orientation refers more to whom he or she is sexually attracted to, while sexual identity refers to the way people view themselves sexually. I believe that one doesn’t have to identify with either homosexuality or heterosexuality. In my opinion, there are certain situations where it could be somewhat impossible to label one as homosexual or heterosexual.
