One of the most important leadership roles I’ve had is being Editor and Chief of the Yearbook, The Pinnacle, committee at Pikesville High. Being the Editor and Chief requires creativity, communication, collaboration, patience, and responsibility. Prior to becoming the Editor in Chief I was just a part of the committee for two years. My sophomore year was my first year in Yearbook and I was just learning about the in’s and Out’s about how to create a successful yearbook. This definition of Leadership is best restated by my very own father “A person can demonstrate leadership skills even when not in a leadership position.” Throughout my high school years so far, I have demonstrated leadership mostly in the field of Boy Scouting in two different Troops. I started out my leadership trail in Boy Scouting by becoming a Troop Scribe who as per se the Boy Scout Handbook, 2016 Edition “The Scribe attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings. He records attendance and dues payments of all troop members and records advancement in troop records and on the troop advancement chart.” After that, I ascended into becoming a Patrol Leader and then acting as a Senior Patrol Leader, the highest youth leader of the troop, handling all patrols’ affairs and coordinating with the Scoutmaster for advice and consent.
I believe that I manifest the four pillars that the National Honor Society values. I display scholarship by working hard to achieve good grades in all high school and college courses I am enrolled in. I believe it’s important to raise my own standards in the classroom and I understand that my high school education directly affects not only college, but every day after my education. I demonstrate leadership by having confidence in myself to be a good leader for others.
My Values of becoming a part of the NJHS I am Lauren Forsyth and a student of Catonsville Middle School. I feel that I should be a part of National Junior Honor Society because of my dedication towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. The following essay will demonstrate how I have dedicated my time towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. As of 2016, I have dedicated myself to 47 hours of service learning and giving back to my community is a very important part of my life. In 6th grade I created a fundraiser to help breast cancer awareness to help find a cure for breast cancer and I had earned 5 service learning hours with two hundred dollars raised in total at my school.
Being involved in many activities in high school, from athletics to fine arts, has taught me how to work well with others as well as work hard under pressure. One of the many organizations I have been involved in while in high school is student council. I am currently serving my third year as student council president for my class and in doing so it has taught me leadership and organization. Student council calls for many responsibilities and opportunities including, service projects for the community, planning a variety of events for the school, and planning major events such as homecoming and prom. Planning and organizing events has given me the opportunity to communicate and meet new people.
The first reason why I should be in National Junior Honor Society is because of my leadership skills. The first example of my leadership skills are applied to my youth group in the Cecilton Parish. I am the treasurer and help with the Ideas for fundraising. We, as a group held a spaghetti dinner for the church and I managed the money and the setting. Pursuing this further, I actively show leadership in school.
I took my first AP class during my sophomore year. The class was AP Biology which was incredibly difficult, but with hard work I was able to succeed. The year after I decided to enroll in AP Chemistry. I thought that if I was able to succeed in Biology, I would have no problem succeeding in Chemistry. The first week of junior year arrived along with AP Chemistry.
In the end of my seventh grade year I got recommended by my teachers to be a part of the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.. During that conference I learned how to exhibit my gifts and talents and collaborate with other leaders.

I was nominated to represent our school in Southports Anual Rotary Public speaking Competition, were I came 2nd place, speaking about LGBT rights and LGBT youth. This particular experience taught me the importance of researching a subject and making it suitable for a different audience than usual. It was quite a shock for a room full of vicars, and were the average age was 75, luckily it went down well. The biggest skill that having a leadership role taught me, was that teamwork is my biggest ally. Taking on such a huge responsibility and a number of projects, alongside sitting my GCSE's was a risk.
Semester Reflection Throughout the semester in AP Biology I’ve been able to cover several different topics. These include being able to identify biological processes that require energy, investigating and modeling ways organisms capture and store free energy for use in biological processes and investigating and explaining how organisms respond to changes in their environment. Over the semester I have been able to gain a full understanding and can demonstrate proficiency in each of these components of the curriculum. The work that I have completed involving these topics shows this.
From contesting for this position to getting elected and working for betterment of my house group, I gained a lot of experience and self-confidence and became more responsible. Being a vice captain, I played an important role in addressing and motivating students, advising and helping them, and earning points for my group by participating in many competitions alone or in a team. I also served as the student voice of the school to a variety of external and internal constituents. The student council served as a bridge between the students and the school heads and administration.
