Biomedical Engineering Major: Personal Statement

While my interest in education has been long-standing, it has transformed into a serious pursuit only in the past few months. Although teaching has always been one of my lifelong interests, I never considered it an idea to pursue until the end of my third semester of college. I came to college with the final goal of helping others. When my grandfather passed away from a heart attack, I chose to be a Biomedical Engineering major. I aimed to make biomedical devices accessible to individuals with similar backgrounds, those with low income and familial genetic health problems. My high school band teacher made me fall in love with my passion, music. He taught me how to teach, even before I knew I wanted to teach others. I was always tasked with helping others who were not as versed as I was in the class. I then went on to do lessons and taught trombone to a middle schooler. My teaching opportunities have been limited due to pursuing different career goals in previous years, but I have always been a leader and have taught how to dance in a quince, and have tutored others in subjects. I am driven to assist others in realizing and achieving goals they may not have considered viable due to unforeseen circumstances. While my love of music is strong and made me realize my ambition for teaching, I have been drawn to teaching science due to my general interests as well as my grandfather's passing. Possessing a strong foundation in science is a valuable asset. My grandfather, a passionate science enthusiast, took pleasure in imparting new knowledge to others despite not being an educator by profession. Despite past complexities, I am resolute in embracing these qualities, recognizing their power to guide us toward comprehensive understanding and positive change. With this in mind, an effective teacher has to guide and possess the ability to command a room with a positive and engaging presence. This creates an environment conducive to effective and enjoyable teaching. In numerous situations, I have been the go-to person, guiding my peers back to our primary objectives and seamlessly transitioning us to the subsequent topic at hand.
