As the population of this world continues to grow, it is uncertain exactly what the future will look like. With an expected population of 9.6 billion people by the year of 2050, it is most uncertain in the eyes of farmers and growers across the world exactly how we will be able to provide for everyone. The agriculture industry has begun testing many different technologies and methods that might help to increase the efficiency of agriculture, as we know it today. One of the most controversial technologies that have begun to catch the attention of most people today is biotechnology and even more so, genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Though the agriculture industry has used biotechnology for quite some time, the industry has turned toward biotechnology more heavily, due to the quick rate of population growth, to continue to provide proper quality and quantity of food throughout the world. Biotechnology is continually contributing to the current and future standards of living, which is why the future of genetically modified organisms is important to the sustainability of the future.
Genetically modified organisms have received a terrible reputation because of the so-called harmful health affects they pose and along with the potential environmental impacts. Due to these misconceptions, GMOs have been looked down upon as a negative technology that could cause more harm than good. In a recent study by Dr. Najafi, the advantages/disadvantages throughout the history of GMOs were studied to try to understand the affects of these biotechnological advancements, how they affect agriculture now, and how they might affect the industry in the future.
