Have you ever noticed someone who is happy one second, but in the blink of an eye, they act like they could kill everyone on the planet? Have you then wondered what is wrong with them? That type of behavior can be a sign of bipolar disorder. It's important to educate yourself about bipolar disorder in order to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Bill clinton said, “Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shames us all”. Understanding the definition, symptoms, treatment and resources surrounding bipolar disorder will help create a society of educated individuals who are less likely to judge others. Since mental illness cannot be seen by the naked eye, it is imperative to educate ourselves. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) , “bipolar disorder is a persistent illness with recurring episodes of mania and depression that can last from one day to months. I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don't have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it”. To me, this quote means that people who are suffering from bipolar disorder are seeing others with it and getting more self-confidence, and I think that is why they are going for treatment. Many people suffering from bipolar disorder are finally seeking treatment, and society is at last informing themselves, but the problem is not yet dealt with. It is important to understand bipolar disorder because each one of us has a responsibility to make our society a better place for all
