“When I look at the life I have built for myself, it is hard for even men to believe that I was ever a homeless drug addict” (Mitchell 7). Tracey Helton Mitchell, the author of The Bix Fix, stated this in her book. Based on Mitchell’s book, drug addiction takes a big toll on one's life. There are people out there who are trying to put drugs aside, and give life a better shot than the first. Tracey Mitchell wrote this book to explain her life experience with using heroin, and then being able to get off the drug, and her goal of the book was to give people who are in the same shoes as her some hope. She first starts the book with talking about how being clean was achieved, and how her life is good now because she put drugs down. Then towards the middle of the book she described many events that took place when she used drugs, and the recovery process that she went through. Mitchelle dedicated a whole chapter in her book about the recovery process she went through. She ended the book with talking about how she is now clean and has a family. This impacts the audience by how even though she did drugs, she was able to pull through recovery even though it was hard on her life. For example, Mitchell noted, “At the end of day two, I was shaking so hard and it was so noisy in the jail, I felt like I had boarded a rocket ship” (60). It was not easy to get off drugs, but Mitchell was determined to get through it, and that is what she did. The book is written in an essay way by how she describes the events in chronological order for the readers to follow along. The organization of the book helps the intended audience because it shows that recovery takes some time, and that her life was crazy, yet she managed to get off the drugs. In part three of the book, Mitchelle explained some information to the readers that she may of though have been important for them to know about. There was one specific part where she talked about what Heroin was. She specified stated: “According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse…” (Mitchell 227). She also cited information regarding heroin from The Drug Policy Alliance” (Mitchell 227). Since Mitchell including these situations, it gives the reader the impression that she did her research, and she has looked into what she is talking about. There was another part of the book where she talked about Northern Kentucky Hates Heroin group, and the Davis Direction foundation and how they help families who are dealing with a member with drugs (Mitchell 232). Once again, this makes the reader know that she has taken the time to do research, and to give extra source for those who are seeking help with
