The overall argument of Robert O. Self’s Introduction, in the book “American Babylon,” are the different aspects of postwar Oakland and the East Bay, socially, economically, and politically. There are three key claims Self makes in the Introduction. First, Self claims there were two controversial political ideologies in postwar Oakland, one being black power, including politics of deference and empowerment, and second a neo-populist, conservative homeowner politics of white residents. Another claim Self makes is the idea that the postwar black struggle and politics of suburban building shaped the political culture in Oakland and the East Bay. The third key claim Self makes is the modernization of space; space as property, as a social imagination, and as a political scale.

In this particular article, Ivan Fernandez discusses the unique connection between hip-hop and indigenous people. In the past few years, many more indigenous music artists have begun to voice out their stories of oppression and their traditions that have been suppressed for such a long time through hip-hop. This is because hip-hop is utilized as a medium for indigenous artists to take back their culture and tradition. This is connected to the historical material that we have studied because it pertains to the history and background of hip hop. Social location is a self-identify term, which refers to an individual’s status in the society. People are socially constructed into a number of relationships within our family, school, church, and working place. Social location includes race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, age, education, and political stance. I found that Black Life Matters relates to my social location. Toni Morrison’s novel Jazz, is an experimental postmodern novel that is essentially about the Great Migration and the African-American migrant experience. The novel powerfully captures a vision of an urban setting, specifically Harlem, where the main characters are all migrants from the South, whose stories are shared by shifting narrators. Indeed, the narrator switches so often that by the end of the novel, the book itself narrates as a “mega-voice.” This “voice” can be easily compared to jazz music, because of the improvisational style of the book.
