In the music industry artists spend a great deal of time and money producing songs and music videos for society’s enjoyment. While both the lyrics and music videos are important separately, the most important aspect is how they work in unison with each other. In “#WHEREISTHELOVE,” The Black Eyed Peas demonstrate how important it is to intermingle the lyrics and music video to create an overall message with emotion. In 2003, The Black Eyed Peas first released the song “Where is the Love? In response to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Thirteen years later, The Black Eyed Peas re-released the song changing the lyrics, music video, and song title, but keeping the overall message the same. Throughout the song “#WHEREISTHELOVE,” the Black Eyed Peas utilize pathos to appeal to the audience’s emotion, while using the music video to strengthen their message. The Black Eyed Peas use symbols, imagery, and allusions, to demonstrate the underlying message of the lyrics and music video.

By using this, the artists give a well-constructed argument with prime examples of how the world has not changed since 2003 and in some ways has gotten worse. By using these forms of rhetoric devices, the artists establish a deep sense of empathy and concern for our world, and leaves the audience with an image of children holding up the red question mark, illustrating that society needs to make a change in order for the violence to settle and the hate to stop.
