The 60s-70s were a time of triumph and the overcoming of segregation for African Americans in the U.S. Many civil rights groups were formed to help achieve this goal. One of the most important and effective groups was called the black panthers. They provided a safe feeling that the minorities in America that they were not used to. As well as helping end segregation they also helped offer many much needed services to children that required help.
They were founded in 1964 by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton. Huey P. Newton had been an activist since he was a teenager. He had taught himself to read and attended college and law school. He met Bobby Seale in law school and they together created the Black Panther group. Bobby Seale had allegedly become politically involved after hearing Malcom X speak on the issue of African American freedom. After helping create the group he became the chairman. In 1969 he was tried for inciting riots but eventually those charges were dropped.It was created to patrol black neighborhoods and protect the innocent from police brutality. It was basically a guideline of social justice for minorities that emphasizes economic justice. It touches on every discriminatory issue that African Americans face on a daily basis. One of its main emphasis and goals was to terminate,as mentioned before, police brutality among African Americans.
