Black lives matter. The contemporary movement started in 2013 campaigns against the brutality, prejudice, and racism experienced by the African American community in America. The activist group works to unite African Americans in one common message: they will be heard and they will not be invisible. However, this idea of invisibility has been prevalent in African-American history since the Middle Passage. African Americans have continually felt forcibly unnoticed in society, played with as toys for entertainment and productivity purposes only.
In the book Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, Griffin observed racism firsthand. But he can never fully experience being a Negro, he only changed his skin for 6 weeks. These are point from the book that prove this. In the book Griffin was a white man who wanted to change his skin color to experience racism and see what a Negro goes through.
After learning about the death of Emmett Till and being posed with the question of if it sparked the black lives matter movement, I would have to agree. With the social injustice Emmett Till endured it would not be right to claim the attention brought to this subject did not spark the modern day justice movement “Black Lives Matter.” First of all, the Till murder was about a fourteen year old, African American male who went down to Money, Mississippi to visit his family. While down there, Till entered a store and upon leaving he whistled at a white lady, not knowing this was considered a heinous crime. The white lady eventually told her husband about the incident, obviously, this was not appreciated so the husband decided to punish Till.

Have you ever noticed any racism in your life? John Howard Griffin decided to prove it existed against blacks by becoming black himself to experience it firsthand. He experienced life from a different point of view, that had deprived him of his civil rights in the South. One critique that read his book, Black Like Me, states that he could never relate to the black race because he was only a black for 6 weeks and that he knew he’d be white again. I believe that Griffin can relate to them, Griffin experienced a lot of racism to the point he was very depressed.
The public education system provides different quality of education for students based on their community and skin color. For African Americans, that means the public education system is designed to prevent black and brown students from a higher education. In his book I Am Not Your Negro, James Baldwin, an African American novelist and essayist, writes about three civil rights leaders who had their own beliefs when it came to racial issues in America during 1950s and 1960s. These men, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evers, were all assassinated before the age of 40. Black Power is a term used to refer to various associated ideologies associated with African Americans in the United States, emphasizing racial pride and the creation of black political and cultural institutions to nurture and promote black collective interests and advance black values (Boundless). The Black Power movement grew out of the Civil Rights Movement that had steadily gained momentum through the 1950s and 1960s (Law Jrank). The Black Power movement was never a set in plan movement, although it did act as a huge turning point in black-white relations in America. It also changed the overall view of how blacks saw themselves. People did agree with this movement and thought of it as a positive and helpful movement for the people.

The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
