Black/ African American athletes take a stand using an empowerment platform, to take a stand against racial in-justice. In a country revolved around freedom of speech and legal rights upon the United States. Black Power is a slogan / phrase for coloreds and in other words it means racial equality. The term became very powerful around the 1960’s when groups such as the “Black Panthers”, and “Black Muslims” African American groups, Athletes or people who supported the movement that they were going after to achieve supported. Even though, these groups and Athletes were out to be heard but they also lead colored communities with guidance and support. It’s a point in the song where he says, “I go to the movies, and I go downtown, and somebody is telling me don’t hang around.” From that’s there he is saying he cannot go see a movie and hang around without being harassed by whites or police. So, the message of the song is I know things are rough, but this will be all over someday and we all will be created equal. He also makes a remark “I was born by the river in a little tent, and oh just like the river I’ve been running, it’s been a long time coming, but I know change is gone come.” Therefore, I Believe one of the most remarkable moments an athlete was the 1968 summer Olympics when Tommie Smith and John Carlos two African American Males who stood on the and held their first up on the podium representing BLACK POWER which is known for the event of the “Black Power Salute” as they received they received they’re first and third place medals. That takes some type of character to stand in a middle of an arena with millions of people and to have the audacity to throw up black power, especially in that time of era where it’s the worst time of era
