My political cartoon addresses the fact that the Articles of Confederation was unable to maintain control over army recruits. The title “The States Gain Higher Ground”, sheds more light onto the flaw, as the states held a high advantage over the national government. The title is a bit metaphorical and literal at the same time, because the State Government is portrayed as perching on upper land much higher than the Congress in my cartoon. This blemish on the national government’s cherished first constitution would have been fatal to the states as its army would become very weak – mainly because the states had the power to decline giving up able bodied men. However, it was not the Articles of Confederation’s only weakness.
When one examines Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, immediately one notices the duality of being black in society. Ellison uses the narrator to highlight his invisibility in society, although African-Americans have brought forth so many advances. This statement best represents the novel as the narrator examines his location (geography), his social identity, historical legacies of America, and the ontological starting point for African-Americans. The “odyssey” that the narrators partakes in reflects the same journey that many African-Americans have been drug through for generations.
The first three chapters of the reading, The Struggle for Black Equality, Harvard Sitkoff runs through the civil rights movement in the 20th century; outlining the adversities facing black people, the resistance to black equality, hindrances to the already progress and the achievements made in the journey for civil rights. John Hope Franklin, in the foreword, dwells on the impact of the time between 1954 and 1992 and the impact it had on American Society, how fight for equality is far from easy and patience is required in the fight to "eliminate the road blocks that prevent the realization of the ideal of equality". In the preface, Sitkoff is clear that that history does not speak for themselves and attempt to detail any particular will be influenced by the author 's personal beliefs. Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is a riveting novel encompassing the life and hardships of an unnamed black narrator in the 1930’s. Ellison’s beautifully crafted work dives deep into the racism and hardships of 1930 and uses numerous conventions to layer depth onto his subject. Ellison attempts to inform the reader of the extreme racism that was rampant in 1930’s society. The violence displayed in the battle royale held in the narrator's home town in chapter one is a shocking opening to the rest of the novel.
In the novel, Invisible Man, the narrator is always in pursuance of justice. His consistent search is driven by his inability to be treated as an equal in this white man’s society. As he fought for justice for the “dispossessed” the Narrator was constantly faced with injustice. Although his success seemed positive in the eyes of others, it had a negative impact on his life as a whole.
The core theme of Ralph Ellison’s short story ‘Battle Royal’ is racism and its manifestation in the society that the author lives in. The conflict between the two cultures, black and white, the segregation and suppression of the African Americans by the whites are emphasized through various incidents. The fact is that the narrator himself unconsciously gives in to racism and as a black man longs for the approval of the white man. He considers himself superior to the other blacks. But the ‘battle royal’ that he is compelled to participate in finally makes him realize that in the society he lives he is “an invisible man.”

In this essay from Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, I will be discussing the notion of invisibility and where associable the related images of blindness and sight. Using two episodes from the beginning of the novel where the narrator is still perceptually blind to the idea that he is invisible. The first episode occurs just after the battle royal, where the narrator delivers his speech to the white people. The narrator’s speech episode is an integral part of the notion of invisibility, simply because the reader is introduced to different ideas of invisibility connected to the image of blindness. The second episode occurs in the Golden Day with the veteran mocking Norton’s interest in the narrator.
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is a modern slave narrative. Through this book, the author and narrator challenge derogatory stereotypes of the white slave owner and the fearless slave showing how intelligent African Americans actually find themselves in the American Landscape (Mahoney 27). When reading the novel Invisible Man, it seems as if there are two novels within one book. There is the surface novel: the novel where the reader is exposed to the psychology of the characters, the emotions, and mood, relationship, and identity. Though this quality is never really found, it merely surfaces as the narrator loses one in exchange for another.
The protagonist in several works of literature is generally plagued by conflicting influences, adding to the overall meaning of the literary work. The Invisible Man’s narrator is the same. As the narrator struggles in pursuit of understanding his invisibility, he finds himself vacillating between influences of Dr. Bledsoe, Brother Jack, and his grandfather. Dr. Bledsoe’s beliefs and actions toward the narrator mark him as invisible, adding to narrator’s inability to advance in life. Dr. Bledsoe explains to the narrator that black people are only able to succeed when they play the white man’s game.
