Now that we’ve established that black internet usage has become increasingly visible due to the normality of integrating social media into our everyday communication habits, we can discuss how black users engage and interact on social media. The environment of Twitter is a place that is both open and contained, this is what contributes to the appeal of the social network. A majority of Twitter activity is available for everyone to peruse, whether or not you are a subscriber to the network but due to the built-in search functionalities and the follow mechanisms, each user has the ability to cultivate their own personal twitter feed that displays content that only appeals to their own narrow or broad interests. Without substantial information about their audience, the ideal audience is seen to be one that is the mirror image of the user but eventually as the actual audience grows and develops it does not resemble the imagined audience of the user. This is evident in Black Twitter, whereby by playing to black stereotypes and inviting others to contribute to the discussion, attracted a number of people in which some were technically categorized with the same race-ethnic categories but had diverse interests, opinions and backgrounds or those that didn’t belong to the same category but had a connection somehow with the discussed culture. Twitter’s requirement to present a singular verifiable identity via a profile, conflicts with users need to implement different self-presentation strategies and users find themselves constantly navigating multiplicity.
