In the story, “Marigolds”, the author, Eugenia Collier uses imagery, diction and connotation in deep way. One example is of connotation is “... how thick were the bars of our cage”. This gives a negative connotation because it's pointing out how big their poverty is. An example for imagery is “running together and combining like fresh water color painting in the rain”. This shows how she and her friends would run around and play together.
Few things are as enchanting as late summer, when the days are long and warm and berries grow ripe. Blackberries are the subject of poet Galway Kinnell’s poem Blackberry Eating, in which he discusses the richness of blackberries and uses them to describe his fondness of words. He gives meaning to his own words through the use of musical devices including imagery, repetition, connotation, and syntax. Throughout Kinnell’s poem, the speaker makes extensive use of imagery.
Often times, when a person experiences something unusual, that experience stays with them forever. The poem “Driving with Animals” by Billy Collins is about the lasting impression that an experience with deer can create. The imagery, sound devices, and figurative language that Collins uses in the poem draw the reader into the poem and makes them feel as if they are the driver in the car. The element of imagery is important in drawing the reader into the poem.
She uses similes when she is judging the stranger sitting in front of her and uses them to compare his appearance. She is observing his shoes and mentions: “...complex patterns like a set of intentional scars,” and “He is wearing red like the inside of the body exposed.” she includes these comparisons to illustrate a more vibrant vision of his outfit to the reader. Moving forward, she also includes her judgment of his appearance and the way he comes across to her. “This life he could take so easily and break across his knee like a stick …” she mentions this to have the reader believe that the person sitting there with her looks shady and sketchy like a thug in a dark alley.
This simile begins the poem with a comparison between the relationship between two gazelles who occupy different plains. This is a clever way to begin the poem because the author uses this same method of comparison between two distant things in the rest of his comparisons. This simile in particular is a good example of distance between two similar things that Dunn is comparing. In this example, the two gazelles are thought to be similar because they are the same species, but as one reads further it is apparent that the gazelles seem close but in reality are far away from each other. This is easy to see because Dunn says the gazelles occupy different plains and are both running from separate lions.
A metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. An example of the metaphor she uses would be “hummocks that sink silently into the, slack earth soup” meaning that there is quick sand that drags you down into the nasty muck in the swamp In conclusion Mary Oliver’s “Crossing the Swamp” is an excellent poem to read. It give several examples of visual imagery, metaphors. The way it is organized there is not multiple stanzas, but the poem is one solid
Silvia Plath’s Mushrooms and Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s Municipal Gum both use extended metaphors to symbolise the poets experience with oppression. Plath’s mushrooms become symbolic of the rise of housewives whereas Noonuccal compares the oppression of Indigenous Australian’s to a native gum tree imprisoned by a city. Through their inclusive language, both poets biographically reflect their encounters with oppression. Both poems are free verse, as Plath carefully configured 11 stanza 3 lined poem, to ensure there are 5 syllables in each line whereas Noonuccal’s 16 lined poem contains a peculiar end rhyming scheme.
“It was only when something struck her as truly funny.” (page. 95) the author used simile to describe Mary Anne’s change of laughter after few weeks she’ve been in war place. The imagery on page 100, the author used metaphor to describe Fossie’s felling and to set the mood of lost. “At the girl’s throat was a necklace of human tongues.”

The agony the writer is feeling about his son 's death, as well as the hint of optimism through planting the tree is powerfully depicted through the devices of diction and imagery throughout the poem. In the movies "The Outsiders" and "West Side Story" I noticed that there were many similarities and differences. For example, West Side Story was a musical and the gangs were known for having one 'Hispanic gang' and one 'Caucasian gang,' but The Outsiders was not a musical and the gangs were based on the poor side of the town and the richer part of the town. Although, even with the many differences there were also many similarities like, most of the people in the movies were in two gangs who hated each other. As I was watching both movies I found that many of the similarities came from how the characters acted, their interests/the scenes and the plot so, I decided to write my paragraphs based on those three subjects.
In the poem “Blackberry-Picking,” author Seamus Heaney uses imagery, diction, and metaphor in order to describe the narrator’s experience while picking blackberries with someone. Heaney uses imagery throughout the poem. He begins in the first stanza, line three when he describes one of the blackberries, “At first, just one, a glossy purple dot.” This clarifies the ripeness and desirability of the blackberry. The following line, “Among others, red, green, hard as a knot,” describes the blackberries that are less than desireable; the unripe ones.
This poem is written in free verse, has an irregular meter, uses the literary element of poetic sounds, and does not use rhymes to express its meaning. The poem is an ode that is written to describe a strong emotion about something. In this case, the emotion of eating pork. Young writes the poem to describe his love and enjoyment of eating pork, but also addresses the sins this food has when partaken. The tone of the poem is contentment; eating the pork makes him happy and satisfied.
