Over the years I have heard and seen a multitude of pictures and videos from the world famous Sea animal aquarium: SeaWorld. The park is best known for it’s most eye-catching and famous attraction: the Killer whales (also known as Orcas). Because they have shows where they have the Killer whales perform unnatural things, it’s many locations have attracted millions of people from all over the globe. However, in this past couple of years, I have seen many things that made me stand even stronger in my personal belief about SeaWorld: it should be shut down. I’ve seen countless twitter posts, news articles, the movie Blackfish, and even heard fellow classmates talking about the controversial issue in our society. The thing that sticks out most to myself and the public is the alarming number of Killer whale deaths there has been at SeaWorld facilities all around. The most ironic thing about all these deaths? None of them were from old age. In the movie Blackfish, it uses the most recent Killer whale park death (Dawn Brancheau, 2010), and from there goes into detail about everything wrong with these parks. It shows us how the whales need to be in their family pods, and how they are taken captive and separated from their mothers to go live the rest of their lives in misery. This movie raised awareness of what really goes on, and put pressure on SeaWorld. According to The Dodo, Sixty two Killer whales have died since SeaWorld has opened its many parks. This just goes to prove my point again at how these animals don’t do well at all in captivity. I can’t help but wonder how such a place is still in business. People who have really looked into SeaWorld and the problems it holds know the truth, but so many people don’t know or understand the importance of it. These Killer whales that should be out in the ocean, roaming hundreds of miles every day, should not be in a tiny shallow tank that causes them harm. They should be with their family pods and be eating tons of fresh fish, keeping them healthy and strong.
