At the turn of the century, blacks have been free for some time and in order for their advancement to freedom to occur they must be able to have a say not only in politics but the economy as well. In order for blacks to succeed in the time of the early 1900's they must stay in the south in order to take control of it. Blacks have the power to control the economy in the south because they are the only ones willing to do the labor. This is why I believe the idea of blacks moving to the north is not what is best for the blacks of the 1900's. This not to say that there are several opportunities for blacks in the north but for people who have done nothing but labor, the south is all that they know. Obviously when slavery was emancipated blacks would have been at the height of their struggle in their south because all of the slave owners would have been hesitant to let them go, let alone the negative out lashes of the south. This is not to say that racism and discrimination was still not occurring, but it possibly was not as harsh as it had been before, which is why the blacks had more of an advantage at the turn of the century. Just because the south had been one of the most heavily discriminative place on the earth during slavery, doesn't mean that it will always be a harsh and prejudice place. Just like a place on earth there is the chance for the south to socially change. While the rest of America had an idea of what the black population endured it did not attest to what they had actually battled throughout the centuries of oppression and the current times. At a young age many black children are oblivious to the fact of that the color of their skin determines so much of what is to come in their lives. All kids are born yearning for what they think to be life and they fail to realize how harsh the world is until they are directly outcast by their difference such as what happened to Dubois. White America cast a veil onto all blacks as a whole regardless of their stature or character. Unfortunately, black children do not realize this because they are shut out by the veil simply because they are born with it. (Souls, 2) Blacks are linked to the negative stereotypes of being uncivilized barbarians who have no etiquette in society. There negative image only continues further and further into the future because it is never broken by the white man. This negative imaging is only a constant trap to the black man because they are stuck in the constant cycle of degradation. This is one of the many ways that white Americans are constantly able to keep blacks in check because no matter what happens, blacks will continue to be born into this misfortune of being an outcaste at birth.
