Blame can be stated as the justification that someone did not play a substantial part in a negative event by putting another at fault. Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend in their book It’s Not My Fault: The No-Excuse Plan for Overcoming Life’s Obstacles stated, “We live in a culture of blame. People will blame anyone or anything for their misery sooner than take the responsibility to own it and make it better.” People blame others to avoid the outcome that not doing so would cause. Throughout The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, blame frequently causes conflict. Tybalt and Capulet can be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Capulet becomes angry towards Tybalt for rejecting one of his guests. After the party, Tybalt continues to be angry for Romeo being at the party. Since Mercutio took Romeo to the party, Tybalt arranges a meeting with Mercutio. They begin to fight. After a long fight with Romeo and others in the audience, Romeo begins to attempt to break up the fight. Tybalt extends his sword towards Mercutio in an attempt to poke Mercutio. Mercutio struggles with Romeo and accidentally struggles into Tybalt’s sword as Tybalt extended it. Once Tybalt stabs Mercutio, the fight ends and Tybalt leaves. Mercutio then dies. Romeo becomes angry about this and kills Tybalt out of revenge, blaming Tybalt for Mercutio’s death. Romeo becomes angry over Mercutio’s death and goes after Tybalt. Upon reaching Tybalt, Romeo and Tybalt begin to fight.
