Every person is different in their own way, which makes every relationship unique and complex. In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, Stella and Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski are the three main characters. Blanche desperately relies on her sister to take care of her in a time of darkness, while she intrudes into Stella and Stanley’s new life in New Orleans. Throughout the play, Stella and Stanley’s relationship is characterized as traditional, young love. On the other hand, Stella and Blanche are being brought back together by the loss of their plantation and the deaths in their family. Stella exclaims to Blanche when she arrives how she cannot bare to be alone for a few days when Stanley is traveling for work. Not only does she go insane, but she “cries on his lap like a baby” when Stanley returns home (25). Stella’s action demonstrates how madly in love she is with her husband and how she needs him to be sane. Additionally, when Blanche asks about Stanley, Stella tells her all good qualities about him because she is proud of her man and blind to his flaws. However, when Blanche finally gets to spend time with Stanley, she perceives him quite differently than Stella does. For example, when Stanley’s poker night got out of hand, Blanche was appalled with the way Stanley was acting, especially when he beat Stella. Moreover, Blanche cannot fathom how Stella puts up with his rude and animal like behavior around his friends and at home. Contrastingly, when Stanley sobered up he realizes that he was in the wrong and needs Stella in his life. Stella is able to forgive Stanley when he “fell to his knees in the steps and pressed his face to her belly, curving a little with maternity” because she knows he did not mean to hurt her. When Blanche arrives at New Orleans both of them are ecstatic to be with each other because they were very close at Belle Reve. Blanche asks Stella, “Will Stanley like me, or will I just be a visting in-law?” (23). This demonstrates how much Blanche wants to be accepted into Stanley and Stella’s family and how she desires to be liked by Stanley because she has no one else but Stella to love her. Also, Stella makes sure she compliments Blanche on how well she is looking because Stella knows how much her appearance means to her. She wants to make sure Blanche is happy and feels welcome in New Orleans. Additionally, Stella told Stanley to try to understand and be nice to Blanche because she wanted things to work out with all of them considering she loves both Blanche and Stanley. However, Stella always is on Blanche’s side when Stanley and Blanche do not get along because she knows family comes first. For example, Stella says, “Lately you been doing all you can think of to rub her the wrong way, Stanley, and Blanche is sensitive and you’ve got to realize that Blanche and I grew up under very different circumstances than you did” (98).
