One must ride a bridge over the river to get to the House of The Old or the Giver’s home. This section of the river seems violent because of the excerpt, “Now he was on the bridge, hunched over on the bicycle, pedaling steadily. He could see the dark, churning water far below” (163). This description may be exaggerated, though, because of the melancholy mood of the chapter. At one point, a Four named Caleb was lost in the river, and the community performed the Ceremony of Loss.

Sampsell deals with his struggles of depression and harmful thoughts after he meets a man at his job that expresses his feelings and desires to commit suicide by jumping off of a bridge. In this essay, Sampsell uses morose word choices to effectively show insight, heartbreak, and the responsibilities that involve one’s life after death. He is eloquent in his description of pain and desolation and has a rhetorical appeal, oriented around pathos, in his relatability. The reader
