As a child, one day you wake up and go outside to play for the last time without realizing it. At the moment it seems as if life is just happening until looking back and realizing how much maturity and growth you’ve encountered as an individual.
Coming of age is marked by the loss of innocence and growth from young adult to adult. Challenges and obstacles are sure to come your way when settling to the realization that childhood is no longer in your presence. Focusing on what the future and having helpful guidance could help encourage the pathway to adulthood and finding your way in life.

Antonio in Bless Me Ultima conquers the fears and challenges with the help of Ultima, he of course has to fight the battle in his head that are stopping him from following either his mothers or fathers career path. Quoting Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima, “Once I had told my mother about my dreams, and she said they were visions from God and she was happy, because her own dream was that I should grow up and become a priest.” (Anaya 4-5) Antonio tried to communicate with his mother so she could understand the stories behind his dreams but she only wanted to look at it the way she wanted. She wanted Antonio to be the priest of the family and grow up in her family’s footsteps while on the other hand his father wanted him to grow up to be a vaquero just like his family had raised him. Significance throughout the novel contributes to the reality of how difficult growing up and choosing your lifestyle may be just because you do not want to hurt anyone even though it is the way life you choose and it should only benefit your
