Along with these events there are themes such as Faith, Family, Identity, and Forgiveness. This essay is about how the theme forgiveness is displayed and developed throughout the storyline. The first quote I’ve chosen states, “God was not always forgiving.He made rules to follow and if you broke them you were punished. The Virgin always forgave. God had power. You would have a God who forgives all, but when it comes to your personal whims you seek punishment for your vengeance. You would have my mother rule my heavens, you would send all sinners to her for forgiveness, but you would also have her taint her hands with the blood of vengeance. Vengeance is Mine! He shouted, “not even your golden carp would give up that power as a God!” This quote happened in a dream of Antonio’s. That means it’s his own realizations deep down that created this fictional scenario. That being said, this dream shows that Antonio subconsciously knows he has been selfish in asking God to punish Tenorio for killing Narcito but “God” says that Antonio is being self-centered. God thinks Narcito should be punished the same as Tenorio because he isn’t a great man and he’s surely sinned. God’s claim is that Antonio would be happy with a God (The Virgin) who only looked out for his own egotistical interests. It wasn’t good for Antonio to seek vengeance and deep down he knew. In the first quote, Antonio is told that you shouldn't always expect to be forgiven. There are rules to follow and if you break them you are punished. However his view on that changes when Ultima tells him if you were truly
