In the “Children on the battlefield” article written by Marcie Schwartz explains that boys under 18 have served in many wars including the Civil War. They would join by lying about there age, having their parents sign them up, or there teachers would influence the recruiting officer to let them join. Blitzkrieg or lightning war in German is a tactic that involves quickly attacking the enemy's strong points with bombs from planes. The novel The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien is a collection of interrelated short stories that challenge many principal ideologies relating to a culture, place or time. Ideologies are formed by a dominant social class and represent an abstract meaning for a cultural, political and societal principle. O’Brien presents the reader with a set of beliefs from the time period, however he challenges these ideologies, and presents them in a new light. O’Brien challenges the principal ideology about the importance of the USA’s involvement in the Vietnam War and its necessity to resolve the threat of communism.
General Patton, in the Battle of the Bulge exercised the principles of mission command to the fullest and they yielded significantly great results for the Allied forces. General Patton employed each of the principles in different ways in order to ensure that the German surprise attack did not significantly set back the Allied forces in the war. The exercise of mission command allows a commander to conduct military operations and missions through dispersed execution. According to Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 6-0, Mission Command, the definition of mission command is “the exercise of authority and direction by the commander using mission orders to enable disciplined initiative within the commander’s intent to empower agile and adaptive leaders in the conduct of unified land operations”. General Patton exhibited four of the mission command principles extremely well during the Battle of the Bulge.
