Blob fishes scientific name is “Psychrolutes Marcius”. The blob fishes name comes from the Greek word “Psychrolouteo” meaning “to have a cold bath”. It inhabits the deep waters off the coasts mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand.
They are made of a material that is slightly denser than water. Their blobby appearance is due to a lack of bones and muscles. Blob fish are typically shorter than 30 cm. They live at depths between 2,000 and 3,900 ft where the pressure is 60 to 120 times as great as at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy. Instead, the flesh of the blob fish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor

They are actually close to extinction. This is because people are going deep-ocean trawling. This means that a net is being drug along the ocean floor, sadly the blobfish gets scooped up as well, and even though it is often tossed back into the ocean, by then it is already too late. In 2006, nature conservationists from all over the world gathered to propose the restriction of bottom trawling on the high seas, but were unable to reach an agreement, leaving the fate of the helpless blobfish greatly uncertain, especially since the deep trawling fishing fleets of Australia and New Zealand are very active, and the blobfish isn’t found anywhere else in the world. The blobfish has become famous because it has been called “cosmetically challenged”. There is a U.K. based group called the Ugly Animal Preservation Society that is supporting the blob fish. It was chosen as the world’s ugliest animal in 2013. The Ugly Animal Preservation Society (UAPS) worked in partnership with the National Science and Engineering Competition and the campaign generated thousands of votes. The blobfish won the title by almost 10,000
