Different websites target their audience with different content and strategies. Websites, such as WebMD and NIH target consumers with healthcare information and thus try to provide knowledge and advice to healthcare consumers before they can book appointments with doctors. WebMD is one of the most trafficked Web sites dedicated to health-related issues, and has confirmed to have had over 54 million unique visitors on a monthly basis. Its primary audience is mostly patients and other consumers who want to educate themselves by reading about general health and disease information. These consumers seem to trust online content from symptom checkers and home-based vital sign monitors just in the same degree as they trust their doctors. However, both WebMD and NIH target sufferers of chronic diseases and disorders, the aging baby boomers, and their families, who might use the content of the websites.
