Different websites target their audience with different content and strategies. Websites, such as WebMD and NIH target consumers with healthcare information and thus try to provide knowledge and advice to healthcare consumers before they can book appointments with doctors. WebMD is one of the most trafficked Web sites dedicated to health-related issues, and has confirmed to have had over 54 million unique visitors on a monthly basis. Its primary audience is mostly patients and other consumers who want to educate themselves by reading about general health and disease information. These consumers seem to trust online content from symptom checkers and home-based vital sign monitors just in the same degree as they trust their doctors. As such, many healthcare consumers feel that most of the decisions they have made regarding their health have been gotten online and thus the indication of much online traffic. NIH offers content in Spanish language thereby including the Spanish cultural background to its target audience. Additionally, the multilingual PHR system offered by WebMD is an indication that content offered in different languages is open to consumers of all cultural backgrounds.
WebMD targets students of medicine and health communication sciences by offering valuable health information and tools for managing the health of the consumers in a timely and credible manner. However, both WebMD and NIH target sufferers of chronic diseases and disorders, the aging baby boomers, and their families, who might use the content of the websites. WebMD also targets the immigrant communities and thus empowers them to manage their families’ health and as such help them save money and time.
Unlike WebMD, NIH uses claim despite providing consumers with accurate and complete information. As such, website does not guarantee whether there will be no errors and as a result, the website, the U.S. government cannot assume legal liability for the completeness or accuracy of the content, processes, and products contained thereof. As a way of connecting to the audience, social media sites, for instance YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are incorporated.
