These are all great artifact examples, but the one I have selected presented in week 3 is Bob Dylan’s song “The Times They Are a-Changin’”. This song was released on January 13, 1964, and was written, sung, and played by Bob Dylan himself at Columbia Studios, New York City, NY. After listening to this song and reading the lyrics I think that the song answers this question and says it all, but overall the universal idea it represents is that times are changing, we can not stop that, and we all need to come together and stand up before things get worse, such as poverty, and fight for freedom. Bob Dylan’s song actually “became an anthem for frustrated youth. It summed up the anti-establishment feelings of people who would later be known as hippies” (Songfacts, LLC., 2017). The lyrics themselves are actually based on the Civil Rights movement in America. The song “was influenced of course by the Irish and Scottish ballads …‘Come All Ye Bold Highway Men’, ‘Come All Ye Tender Hearted Maidens” (Genius Media Group Inc, 2017). Plus, “The civil rights movement and the folk music movement were pretty close for a while and allied together at that time. Almost everyone knew everyone else. I had to play this song on the same night that President Kennedy died. Somehow it became a constant opening song and remained that for a long time"” (Genius Media Group Inc, 2017). This artifact shows how the times were and what changes were happening during this period and warning for more and what’s to come, such as tolerance and equality replacing traditional virtues. The youth are fighting for freedom and standing up and do not listen to their parents, or even the past. Anyone that does not agree with them will be left behind.
