Robert Allen Zimmerman, famously known as Bob Dylan used his music to engage with the issues of his time. These issues included racism, poverty, and violence. He earned recognition within the music industry, civil rights groups, and music lovers all over the world. This ultimately led to his well deserved reception of the nobel prize. Bob Dylan was born on May 4, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. He and his younger brother David were raised by his parents Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice Stone nearby in Hibbing, a small Jewish community. It was a time when the youths voices were starting to be heard. Many people connect the 60s with peace a time when the phrase “make love not war” became a standard. However, beyond popular belief the 60s was a time of hostility and violence. Examples of this include the assassination of John F. Kennedy and equal rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., violence in the streets, and the war in South East Asia. In a time where violence was occurring almost everywhere, the youth began to make their voices heard. The slogan “make love not war” was created by the younger generation to try and stray from the idea that violence is the only answer to solving our problems. This idea of peace and love mostly generated from the music scene, especially the rock n’ roll bands like The Beatles and rolling stones. Dylan spoke of peace and love but what separated him from the others was his way of shedding light on important conflicts around him. He promoted fighting the problems and trying to stand for rights and issues he thought weren't as they should be. Some of these controversial topics might not have gotten the attention the deserved and so desperately needed without the help of Dylan.
